With attention to responsible labor practices for their facilities in the U.S. and abroad, Alternative Apparel puts a tremendous amount of care into the manufacture of their product, resulting in a premium article of clothing. All of their shirts are garment-washed producing a perfect “no shrinkage” fit and an exceptionally soft fabric—lightweight, fine gauge, and so soft you won’t want to ever take it off.

Ladies long-sleeve shirt: Garment washed, pre-shrunk 100% cotton combed ringspun jersey with 1/3-inch self-fabric collar and coverstitched throughout. These shirts have a tapered waist with a modern, “body conscious” silhouette—the sleeves run narrow and long and the shirts overall run extremely small so be prepared to order a size or two up or, if you have an athletic build or prefer a more relaxed fit, move over to the unisex shirt which we find to be much less tailored.

Ladies’ capped-sleeve crew shirt: Garment washed. Pre-shrunk 100% combed ringspun jersey, with 1/2-inch collar height, self-fabric collar. These shirts have a tapered waist, with a modern, “body conscious” silhouette and the shirts overall run extremely small so be prepared to order a size or two up or, if you have an athletic build or prefer a more relaxed fit, move over to the unisex shirt which we find to be much less tailored.

Unisex long sleeve shirt: Garment washed, pre-shrunk 100% cotton combed ringspun jersey, with 2/3” 1×1 rib collar, side seamed garment. Unisex sizing. For some reason which remains a mystery to us, Alternative Apparel doesn’t produce this shirt in a small size which is a terrible shame because it is a great shirt.

Unisex basic crew short sleeve shirt: Garment washed, pre-shrunk 100% combed ringspun jersey, with 2/3” collar height, 1×1 rib collar, side seamed shirt translates into Alternative Apparel’s best selling co-ed shirt. These run a tad smaller than Alternative Apparel’s long-sleeve co-ed t-shirt.

Ladies’ short sleeve crew neck shirts: Pre-shrunk 100% combed ringspun cotton, 5.0 oz. supersoft jersey knit. Side-seamed with a fashion-fitted silhouette with a 5/8” set-in coverstitched neck and coverstitched double-needle bottom hem. These shirts run small so, like the chromaZONE shirts, if you prefer a snug fit, order as usual. If you prefer a regular fit, consider ordering a size up. If you prefer a more relaxed fit, order two sizes up.

Ladies shirts: Pre-shrunk 100% combed ringspun cotton, 4.8 oz. fine gauge jersey knit. A fashion-fitted ladies silhouette with a shorter length and sleeves. Garment-dyed for a soft fade. These shirts run small so if you prefer a snug fit, order as usual. If you prefer a regular fit, consider ordering a size up. If you prefer a more relaxed fit, order two sizes up.

Unisex shirts: Pre-shrunk 100% cotton 5.6 ounce jersey knit. Comes in long and short sleeves, with shoulder-to-shoulder taping and double-needle stitching on the neckline and bottom hem. Garment-dyed for a soft fade. These shirts run true to unisex size so ladies, order a size down.

ChromaZONE by Anvil Unisex sweatshirts: Pre-shrunk 9.8 ounce heavyweight 80% ringspun cotton and 20% polyester crewneck sweatshirt. This sweatshirt has a woven twill tape at neck back, rolled shoulder seams, and is double-needle stitched throughout with ribbed cuffs and bottom band. We think this sweat runs on the narrow side so take this into consideration when selecting sizes.

Although we haven’t done an official count, probably 90% of ROR garments are made by Comfort Colors and there are many good reasons why this is the case. Chouinard is a fifth generation textile-industry dyer who combines Vermont values and ecologically sensitive production practices to produce shirts that have been recognized for quality for over 30 years. We have been assured that their garments are Fair Trade and the company is continually working to reduce the effluent that is the by-product of the dyeing process.

Ladies’: Pre-shrunk 100% ringspun cotton, 5.4 ounce shirt. Comes in long and short sleeves, with shoulder-to-shoulder taping and double needle stitching on the neckline and bottom hem, 1/2” collar. Garment dyed for a soft fade. A fairly typical ladies’ silhouette with a shorter body length and sleeves, these shirts run true-to-size but if you prefer a more relaxed fit, consider ordering a size up.

Ladies’ fitted: Pre-shrunk 100% ringspun cotton, 4.8 oz shirt that is unbelievably soft without being at all whimpy. It comes in short sleeves only and sports 1/4” split double-needle chainstitched shoulders and neck, a 1/2” rib collar, flatlock stitched sleeves and bottom hem and shoulder to shoulder taping. Unfortunately this shirt is only available in sizes small through x-large but the moment they offer it in xxl, you’l hear us screaming for joy. Because of the fitted silhouette, we think it best to consider this a junior cut and order a size up.

Unisex short-sleeve shirts: Pre-shrunk 100% ringspun cotton, 5.5 ounce heavyweight t-shirt. Reinforced tape on inside shoulder seams and double-needle stitching on collar, sleeves and bottom hem, 3/4” collar. Pigment dyed for a soft fade.

Unisex crewneck fleece sweatshirt: Pre-shrunk 100% ringspun cotton, 10 ounce heavyweight crewneck fleece with double-needle stitched seams throughout and 2×1 ribbed collar, cuffs and relaxed bottom band. Boxy in shape, these sweats are generously sized.

Unisex crewneck fleece hoodie (zip and pullover): Pre-shrunk 100% ringspun cotton, 10 ounce heavyweight crewneck fleece with double-needle stitched seams throughout, relaxed hem, a front pouch pocket and a jersey lined hood with matching drawstring. The manufacturer claims the full-zip version has an “antique brass zipper and zipper pull” but we think this is overstating it a bit—looks just like a nice, hefty zipper to us.

If a shirt can be beautiful both inside and out, this one is it. edun LIVE is a company that was founded by Bono and Ali Hewson and they set the standard for environmentally and socially conscious garments. The t-shirts are made in Africa of 100% certified organic cotton and are Fair Trade from grower to sewer…which means you can do some good by looking good. The shirts are 5.1 oz. 100% combed ringspun organic cotton with double-needle stiched sleeves and bottom hem. They have a more open neck than our other shirts, a tailored cut with slightly longer sleeves and are not, we repeat not pre-washed so please order accordingly based on your drying habits. Until ROR gets its own natural dyeing production up and running this shirt is only available in white and natural.

Gildan is a company recognized for its implementation of socially responsible and environmentally sustainable practices. Gildan’s facilities are WARP (Worldwide Responsible Apparel Production) certified.

Unisex Hooded Sweatshirts: 9.3 oz. 50% cotton/50% polyester fleece. Double-lined hood with matching drawstring, double-needle sewn hood, shoulder, armholes and cuffs and set-in sleeves.

So here’s the thing about these hoodies: although we used to carry only the 9.5 oz 80/20 Gildan hoodie, we pretty much came to the conclusion that it was just too much! Regardless of what the Gildan folks said, they did shrink after washing. Not only did they ride up, but that 9.5 oz started to feel like 2 pounds and getting them off could feel like going 5 rounds with an octopus—definitely not fun at the end of a long day. So, for the most part we moved over to the lighter 9.3 oz. It is still hefty and marshmallow soft, but this one is much more relaxed and doesn’t require any hand-holding through the laundering process. Best of all, the insides of these sweats somehow manage to stay soft, soft, soft.
